Sintra Portugal Tours Reviews
What travellers say about each Sintra tour, and the operators' own ratings side by side.
Every rating below belongs to the operator that runs the tour, whether it is a sintra private tours departure or a shared coach. Each figure comes straight from that tour's own booking listing, and the quotes are travellers' own words, shortened. Across the tours we list they add up to more than 86,000 reviews at an average of 4.8 out of 5. The two busiest by volume are the cheapest coach day out of Lisbon and the Pena Palace entrance ticket, which is the only one of them sold without a guide.

Small-group and coach day trips
The shared departures from Lisbon, where the guide and the group size do most of the work.
“Hugo never let the day feel rushed. There was real time at Pena and again at Regaleira, and the van held six of us — eight at most. Doing both estates on our own would have taken twice as long.”
Nick, United States · Couple · August 2026
“Mário took the day at a slower pace so my cousin’s wife could manage it a year after a hip replacement. We still saw everything on the itinerary. He even had a go at learning a few words of Slovak.”
Adriana, Canada · Family · August 2026
“Ricardo found the photo spots, got us to the palace ahead of the crowd, and knew Sintra and Cascais properly. The drive along the coast afterwards was the part I did not expect to love.”
A traveller, United Kingdom · Solo · July 2026
“Eight hours, and the small group of seven made it comfortable. António was attentive the whole way and the countryside drive into Sintra is worth the early start on its own.”
A traveller, United States · Couple · August 2026
“Maria knew the region’s history and traditions, played fado on the drive and explained what we were hearing, and was never once late. I cannot picture this Sintra day trip without her.”
Julie N., United States · Family · June 2026
“I booked as a solo traveller and stopped wondering whether to do Sintra independently about an hour in. Puri was excellent company and knew exactly when to leave each stop.”
Alberto M., Spain · Solo · July 2026
“Adolpho knew in advance that I am deaf and went out of his way to make sure I could follow everything he said. In a few hours I understood far more about Portugal than I expected to.”
A traveller, United States · Solo · June 2026
“The start of the walk up to the palace is a bit tough, but it only lasts about ten minutes and the guide warned us in advance. Everything else about the day ran to time.”
A traveller, Australia · Group · July 2026
“Martin got the history across and made everyone laugh doing it. Clearer information on group size beforehand would have helped — we were told small and the number moved — but the day itself was well run.”
Katja, United States · Family · August 2026
“Efficient routing that still covered the highlights, in a comfortable vehicle with a guide who knew the Moorish Castle inside out. The pace is brisk, and more time at each stop would suit some people.”
A traveller, Germany · Couple · May 2026
“Beautiful sightseeing and real history, and the small group was the right call. We could have done with less time in Cascais and more in Sintra itself, but the guide was kind and knew her subject.”
A traveller, Canada · Couple · July 2026
Private tours and classic-car days
Where travellers set the route themselves — and where guides get named most often.
“Inês built the day around what we actually wanted to see rather than a fixed list. Easily the best private guide we have had anywhere in Portugal, and the skip-the-line access at Pena saved us an hour.”
Nalei D., United States · Couple · May 2026
“A few hours with Manuel in the jeep was a genuinely good way to get around the Serra. The coast was our favourite part, and we saw corners of Sintra the coaches never reach.”
A traveller, United Kingdom · Couple · February 2026
Pena Palace entrance tickets
Independent visitors who bought the ticket and made their own way up the hill.
“We came in through the grounds and walked up to the top. Busy, but the views back over the Serra were worth the climb and the ticket got us straight past the office queue.”
Dawn, United Kingdom · Couple · August 2026
“We had a stroller and were given priority access, and there was somewhere to leave it before going in. That kind of thing does not happen everywhere and it made the visit.”
Océane, France · Family · August 2026
What travellers consistently say
The guide is the day
Names come up constantly — Hugo, Mário, Ricardo, Maria, Inês, Puri, Manuel. On a route this well trodden, the difference between a good day and an ordinary one is who is leading it.
Small groups get mentioned unprompted
Travellers on the eight-seat departures raise the group size without being asked. Those on larger coaches raise it too, less happily.
The hill is real
The walk up to Pena comes up in review after review. Most describe it as ten to thirty minutes and worth it; nobody describes it as flat.
Ticket clarity is the common complaint
Where feedback is mixed, it is usually about what a fare did or did not include. Every card here states what its fare covers for exactly that reason.
Reading the ratings before you book
A 4.7 across 23,000 reviews and a 5.0 across 200 are different kinds of evidence. High volume tells you the operation is consistent at scale; a perfect score on a small private tour tells you the guide is good and the sample is small. Both are useful, neither is the whole picture.
The palaces and castles of Sintra is worth a look alongside the scores: several of the differences between these tours are really differences in which monuments they reach. Look at duration and inclusions alongside the score. Several of the lower-rated listings are the cheapest transport-only options, where the complaint is usually about what was not included rather than about the day itself.
Compare the tours behind these ratings
Every option is listed with its rating, its fare and what that fare covers, so the comparison is like for like.
Tickets and hours explains what each monument charges, and Sintra Portugal Tours lists every guided day trip with its full inclusions.
